讲座摘要：Ekphrasis is the original form of intermediality between literature and art, as in the famous description of Achilles’ shield in Homer’s Iliad. What sort of textuality emerges, however, when the object of description is landscape, the earth, which itself is conceived as having both stories to tell and forces and resources that shape narrative and language? This talk compares this ekphrasis of the earth as it shapes three texts set in the deserts of the American Southwest: Mary Austin’s Land of Little Rain (1903); Joy Harjo/Stephen Strom’s Secrets from the Center of the World (1989); and Nicole Brossard’s Mauve Desert (Désert mauve 1987).

图像言说是文学和艺术之中间性的原始形式，如荷马的《伊利亚特》对阿喀琉斯盾牌的著名描述。地球被设想为既有故事可讲，又有形成叙事和语言的力量和资源。那么，如果文学描述的对象是风景和地球，会出现什么样的文本性特征呢？图像言说塑造了以美国西南部沙漠为背景的三个文本：Mary Austin的《小雨之地》（1903年）， Joy Harjo / Stephen Strom《来自世界中心的秘密》（1989年），Nicole Brossard的《莫夫沙漠》（Désert mauve 1987）。本次讲座对这三个文本进行图像言说的比较分析。

Thomas Oliver Beebee is Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Comparative Literature at Penn State University, editor-in-chief of the journal Comparative Literature Studies, and general editor of the Bloomsbury series, Literatures as World Literature. The author of Clarissa on the Continent (1991), Epistolary Fiction in Europe (1999), Nation and Region in Modern European and American Fiction (2008), and Conjunctions and Disjunctions of German Law and Literature (2011), Professor Beebee engages in a number of research areas, including criticism and theory, epistolarity, eighteenth-century literature, translation (theory, practice, and literary mimesis), mental maps in literature, and law and literature.

Thomas Oliver Beebee是宾夕法尼亚州立大学的比较文学教授，《比较文学研究》期刊的主编，担任Bloomsbury文学研究丛书《作为世界文学的文学》总编辑，出版了《大陆上的克拉丽莎》（1991），《欧洲书信小说》（1999），《现代欧洲和美国小说中的民族和地区》（2008），以及《德国法律和文学的连词和分离》（ 2011）；Beebee教授的研究领域广泛，包括文学理论和文学批评，书信文学，十八世纪文学，翻译理论、实践和文学模因，文学的心理地图，法律和文学。
