Alistair Fitt教授学术报告会通知
报告题目:Three Amazing Mathematics Research Problems
报告时间:2016年10月11日(周二)14:30—15:30
报告地点:九教国际学术报告厅
报告人简介:
Professor Alistair Fitt, graduated from Lincoln College, University of Oxford, is Vice-Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University, UK, President-elect of the IMA, and has been the Executive Secretary of ICIAM since 2008. Before joining Oxford Brookes in March 2011, he worked with the University of Southampton for 22 years, latterly as the Head of the School of Mathematics and then Pro Vice-Chancellor, International.
报告主旨:
In this lecture, he will talk about three amazing mathematical research problems. Each of the problems is still open and not yet completely solved, and all three problems are easily stated and understood. The important details can be understood by anybody with a basic undergraduate mathematical training. However they have all led to the development of extremely deep and important mathematical thinking.
Though all of the problems have their original roots in pure mathematics, they also all have a huge number of possible applications in a wide range of fields. They also suggest that, as mathematicians, we may all want to think more about
• The role of the internet and global team working in solving famous mathematical problems
• The role of mathematical history in helping to solve important problems
• How politics affects developments in science and mathematics
