报告题目:Desiccation cracking of soil

讲座介绍:

Desiccation cracking is a commonly occurring phenomenon in unsaturated soil with a high degree of saturation. The occurrence of soil desiccation cracking has a significant effect on the engineering properties of soils as it can considerably increase the hydraulic conductivity and decreases the shear strength of a soil. Thus, it can pose a significant threat to the hydraulic and structural integrity of earthworks, dykes, embankments, engineered barriers and can increase the erosion potential of surface soils. Understanding of the phenomenon is also of significant importance in the field of agricultural engineering due to its role in the transportation of near-surface water, air and nutrients and its potential to increase ground water pollution. A clear and robust explanation of desiccation-induced cracking also has applications in food engineering, material engineering and chemical engineering. This presentation will show the applicability and capability of a cohesive fracture model in the numerical modelling of soil desiccation cracking.

报告人介绍:

Dr Yilin Gui is a Lecturer of Geotechnical Engineering in Newcastle University, United Kingdom. Before the current position, he was research fellow in Nanyang Technological University and Monash University. He obtained his PhD from University of New South Wales. His research is focused on geotechnical engineering, constitutive and numerical modelling of geomaterials, environmental and energy geotechnics.
